Thank you so much for the update. I can’t wait to see and talk with him. Prayers are being said for him at my church.
Sharing a comment from our co-leader Hoy. It’s in reply of hearing about Paul’s accident and the request to consider setting up rides:
“It’s been hard to digest what happened to Paul. I also had a very bad accident several years ago. Chipped tooth, lacerated lip, broken eye socket, concussion. Without a good helmet, I would not be alive today. It really made me rethink bike riding and I was out for several months. The accident occurred when I was on a group century ride. Since that time, I never rode another century. I have done many metric centuries since but my bike riding has definitely been reduced. I have organized many rides over the past few years with a strong emphasis on safety. The best ride is when you can finish and ride another day.
I would love to organize and lead/sweep rides while Paul is rehabilitating. My riding history has well over 100 different rides throughout California. I also have the ability to tap into the Los Angeles Wheelmen’s library of rides which is one of the most extensive in Southern California.
I do have some conditions. I want to ensure each ride has a leader and a sweep. There are people with different levels of experience and fitness along with a broad range of “bicycles”. Anything can happen and it is always best to have someone follow the flock to ensure we all finish safely. I also prefer to reduce the average speed of the rides down to 12-14 miles per hour. The faster you go, the more serious any accidents become.
I have been in the process for renovating a house over the past year and will move in within a few months. It’s a bit further east from Downtown LA so traveling to the Calabasas area will add a few more miles to the trip.
Again, I would definitely want to help and continue the bike meetup activities. Perhaps a few of us can meet or have a phone call to plan out future bike rides” ~ Hoy.
Hoy, I really appreciate that you are stepping up to organize rides while Paul is recovering. I fully agree on limiting the speed to 12-14 mph in most cases. I personally feel riding within this range is more relaxing and enjoyable.
